How to Control Oily Skin; Practical Tips for a Shine-Free Face

Managing oily skin can feel like a constant battle — especially in a warm, humid climate. But
understanding why your skin overproduces oil is the first step toward genuinely controlling it,
rather than just masking the problem temporarily.


Why Does Skin Get Oily?
Oil on the skin comes from sebaceous glands situated beneath the surface. These glands produce sebum; a natural lubricant that protects the skin from dryness and environmental damage. When these glands are overactive, the result is excess shine, enlarged pores, and a tendency toward breakouts. Triggers include hormonal fluctuations, humidity, stress, a high-sugar diet, and counterintuitively, stripping the skin with harsh cleansers, which causes it to overcompensate by producing even more oil.


Build the Right Skincare Routine


Step 1 — Gentle Cleanser (Twice Daily):

Use a foaming or gel cleanser formulated for oily or combination skin. Avoid anything labelled ‘deep
cleansing’ or ‘exfoliating’ for daily use, as over-stripping leads to rebound oiliness.

Step 2 — Alcohol-Free Toner:
A toner containing niacinamide or witch hazel helps tighten pores and reduce sebum production
without drying the skin out.


Step 3 — Lightweight, Oil-Free Moisturiser:
Many people with oily skin skip moisturiser — a mistake. Dehydrated skin ramps up sebum
production to compensate. Opt for a gel-based, non-comedogenic formula.


Step 4 — Clay Mask (1–2× Weekly):
Kaolin or bentonite clay absorbs excess oil and helps decongest pores. Use once or twice per week,
not daily.


Step 5 — SPF Every Morning:
Choose a mattifying mineral sunscreen. Skipping SPF leads to sun damage, which weakens the skin
barrier and worsens oiliness over time.

disturbing makeup. Carry them instead of reaching for more powder, which can build up and clog pores.
