Damaged hair does not happen overnight, and it will not fully recover overnight either. But with the right approach, you can significantly improve its appearance, strength, and feel within just a few weeks. The key is understanding what kind of damage you are dealing with.
Signs Your Hair Is Damaged
- Excessive tangling and difficulty combing through even after conditioning.
- A rough, coarse texture that looks and feels dry to the touch.
- Noticeable breakage: short, snapped strands — rather than root-to-tip shedding.
- Dullness and lack of shine, even after washing.
- Elasticity loss: when a wet strand snaps instead of stretching slightly.
Your Repair Routine
Trim the Ends: There is no product that can truly repair a split end — once a strand splits, it can only travel further up the shaft if left untreated. A trim of even one to two centimetres removes the worst of the damage and immediately improves the hair’s overall appearance.
Switch to a Sulphate-Free Shampoo: Sulphates are the detergents that make shampoo lather. While effective at cleaning, they are too aggressive for already-compromised hair. A gentle, sulphate-free formula cleanses without stripping the protective cuticle further.
Use a Deep Conditioning Mask Weekly: A protein-enriched hair mask used once a week helps fill the gaps in damaged cuticles, restoring some of the hair’s structural integrity and making it significantly smoother.
Apply a Leave-In Conditioner or Hair Serum: Leave-in products coat the hair shaft and provide continuous moisture and protection throughout the day. They also reduce friction between strands, minimising further breakage.
Air-Dry When Possible: Give your hair regular breaks from heat. On days when you are not going out, let your hair dry naturally. Reducing heat exposure even two to three times per week makes a meaningful difference.
THE PROTEIN-MOISTURE BALANCE: Damaged hair needs both protein (for structural repair) and moisture (for flexibility). Too much protein without moisture makes hair brittle. Alternate between a protein-rich mask and a deeply moisturising mask week by week for the best results.
